I received a copy of this book, the Baker Compact Biblical Dictionary, and agreed to share about it online. I thought it looked like a helpful tool, for Bible studies, but wasn’t quite sure what to expect. You can purchase your own copy here.
This book is full of information. However, it wasn’t really quite what I expected, so I haven’t utilized it much yet. (It’s just a little above my head, not quite along the lines of most of my Bible studies, but I do think I will use it at some point…)It has 209 pages, and includes definitions on all kinds of Biblical topics. You can find information on anything from “allegories” to “existentialist interpretation”. Or, if you want to know more about “Eblaite” or “kerygma”, this is the book you will probably want to have by your side.
I think this book is an ideal resource for someone who is doing an in-depth study on specific topics, terms, or portions of Scripture.
It is very informative and laid out in an easy-to-read manner.
About the book:
When it comes to the realm of biblical studies, students of the Bible are often overwhelmed, both with the sheer volume of information and with all of the unfamiliar terms, concepts, and topics. Like any other field of study, the serious study of the Bible has developed a specialized vocabulary. The key terms in this important field are defined in The Compact Dictionary of Biblical Studies. It provides clear, concise, and accurate definitions to help students of the Bible make sense of the specialized language of biblical studies.
A quote from the back cover
” This is a great supplement and starting place for giving depth to the historical and interpretative backdrop to your study of the Bible.” –Darrell L. Bock, Dallas Theological Seminary
If you are a serious Bible scholar, you will find this book of great help.
