Book Review – Authentically Izzy

Authentically Izzy

by Pepper Basham

“Dear Izzy—I feel certain there’s a book-loving man living relatively nearby waiting to speak bookish to you ’til death do you part. You just haven’t met yet.”

Izzy Edgewood is a wannabe bookstore owner, quote queen, and Lord of the Rings nerd who has been waiting for Prince Charming to sweep her off her sneakered feet. But it’s hard to meet people when you spend more time with fictional humans than real ones. Which is why her pragmatist cousin Josephine decides to take Izzy’s future into her own meddling hands and create an online dating profile for the hopeful romantic.

To Izzy’s shock (and suspicion), Josie’s plan works. Soon, she’s dialoguing with a Hobbit-loving man named Brodie who lives in a small town an ocean away from her home in the Blue Ridge Mountains. But is their shared love of books, family, and correspondence enough to overcome Izzy’s fear of flying and the literal distance between them? And is a long-distance relationship even worth considering when a local author has been frequenting the library where she works and is proving to be a perfectly fine gentleman?

In this epistolary novel from award-winning author Pepper Basham, bookish dreams and happily-ever-afters collide to create a beautiful sort of magic that’s even better than fiction.

My Thoughts

I am a lover of Pepper Basham’s stories.
Reaching the end of this book was bittersweet.
(I absolutely loved it, by the way… 🙂 )
But…So many questions I still had.
Most importantly.
Will there be sequels?!

On to the review…

I didn’t absolutely love this book right from the beginning. The style felt so different. I do like epistolary stories, but they’re not exactly my favorite. But…since I DO love Pepper Basham’s other books, I was determined to at least give this one a fair try.

It took me until…oh, I don’t know, the 2nd or 3rd chapter, when I began falling in love with Izzy, to really start finding myself invested in this story.

And then, well, I really couldn’t put it down! 🙂

Izzy is quite the character. She’s had a hard life. Lost her parents at a young age, always trying to please the people in her life that are close to her. She never took the chance to find out who she really was.

Enter Brodie. Her online friend, their penpal-ish friendship began through an online dating site. They had so much in common, and just really enjoyed getting to know each other. But Izzy was from Appalachia, and Brodie from Skymar, a faraway country…is there anyway to make a friendship/relationship like this even work?

Then, Brodie decides to visit her….and…..well, I can’t say too much, I really don’t want to give any spoilers.

This story feels authentic to the core. Realistic. Gritty. Romantic. Sweet. So much more I could say.

The whole epistolary thing…well, that is a fun twist. It gives a somewhat limited perspective on what is going on. But Pepper Basham does it so well.

If you like sweet love stories, be sure and give this one a try!
